Wallenstein's Avenue to Jičín
Český ráj · CHKO Český ráj · Point to point · hiked 12 May 2018
A 24.9 km point-to-point hike from Libuň to Jičín over the Alainova věž lookout, Brada castle hill and Zebín, finishing along Wallenstein's lime avenue.
Everything about this day hangs off one railway line, so the logistics are simple — train out to Libuň, train or bus back from Jičín. It is also the Český ráj without the rock-town crowds: the route keeps clear of Prachov’s gorges, and the quiet highlight of its morning has no road leading to it at all.

From Libuň station the route heads east through Javornice and climbs onto the wooded ridge that closes the horizon to the north. The first kilometres are open field lanes with views back to Trosky‘s double silhouette; then the forest takes over for the long traverse below Tábor.
At km 6 the trees suddenly open on Alainova věž, alone in its clearing — since its 2015 restoration you can climb the spiral staircase to the gallery. It is the quiet highlight of the morning: no road leads here, so you will likely have it to yourself.

The way then drops south out of the woods to Železnice at km 11, the natural lunch stop — a pub and a wine restaurant sit on the rebuilt classicist square, with a café by the museum. Stocked up, you cross the open farmland south-west towards the unmistakable bulk of Brada.
The climb to Brada’s summit at km 16 is short but earns the best view of the day: the whole Jičín basin at your feet, Trosky and the Prachovské skály on one side, Zebín‘s cone — your next goal — on the other. If you need a break before or after, there is a pension with a restaurant at the foot of the hill.
From Brada the route descends past Kbelnice and follows the stream to the Bílý mlýn mill ruin at km 20, then tackles the last climb of the day. Zebín is steeper than it is high, and by late afternoon the light on its bare basalt top and the little chapel is at its best.

The finish is the gentlest part: drop from Zebín to the Valdštejnská lodžie and walk the last stretch into Jičín under the four rows of Wallenstein’s lime avenue — flat, shaded and straight into the town centre, where pubs, shops and the connections home are all within a few minutes.

On the way
-
Alainova věž
A neo-Gothic sandstone hunting tower from 1862 on the southern slope of Tábor, built in memory of Alain Rohan — restored by Lomnice nad Popelkou and opened as a lookout in 2015.
-
Železnice
A little classicist town on the edge of the Český ráj near Jičín — heritage-zone square rebuilt after the 1788 fire, a local museum, and an 1866 battlefield trail around.
-
Brada
A 438 m hill above Brada-Rybníček north of Jičín — scant traces of a 13th-century castle, an 1891 memorial cross to the Battle of Jičín, and one of the best views over the Jičín basin.
-
Bílý mlýn
The ruin of a water mill first mentioned in 1432 between Kbelnice and Zebín — it ground until a fire in 1937 and was never rebuilt; a KČT junction still carries its name.
-
Zebín
A 399 m basalt cone above Jičín, crowned by the little baroque chapel of St Mary Magdalene from 1700 — a short, steep climb with a full circle over the Jičín basin.
-
Valdštejnská lodžie
Albrecht von Wallenstein's early-baroque garden pavilion outside Jičín (c. 1630), reached by his four-row lime avenue — the grand unfinished gesture of the duke's planned residence landscape.
