Sixty Kilometres to Roztoky

A 59.8 km single-day endurance walk from Mělník to Roztoky — down the Vltava plain, café stop in Velvary, and Okoř castle as the late-day reward.

Sixty kilometres in one push — my longest walk to date, and a different sport from ordinary hiking. The route is deliberately flat: it trades scenery-per-kilometre for coverable distance, following the Vltava plain south from Mělník and letting the landmarks act as mile-posts. If you attempt it, treat it like the endurance event it is: early start, planned refuels, and shoes you trust.

The first leg crosses the river at Brozánky and runs the flat farm plain through Lužec nad Vltavou and Nová Ves to Velvary — kilometre 25, and the psychological anchor of the day: Café Záložna, in the handsomely renovated old bank on the square, is exactly the refuel you want at that point. The middle leg continues through Kralupy nad Vltavou, the industrial low point of the route — get through it — and climbs gently away from the river into the Zákolanský brook valley.

The reward for the long approach is Okoř around kilometre 45: the song-famous ruin arrives exactly when you need a reason to keep moving. From there the final stretch rolls through Velké Přílepy and drops off the plateau to Roztoky u Prahy, where the train back is mercifully frequent.
