Hazmburk at Dusk

A 30.8 km solo winter walk across the Ohře country — Peruc, the Stradonka lookout, Hazmburk at dusk, and a dark-hour finish in Třebenice.

A solo February day built around one silhouette: Hazmburk stands in view for most of these thirty kilometres, and the whole route is the story of walking up to it. Short winter daylight makes the timing part of the game — I finished in the dark, which is worth planning for rather than repeating by accident.

From the Slavětín stop the way crosses the fields to Slavětín village and on to Peruc — take the time for the village, it is the prettiest thing before the castle. The Stradonka lookout just beyond frames the day’s destination perfectly: Hazmburk dead ahead across the Ohře. The route then drops to the river at Křesín and Levousy and crosses into the open country below the castle hill.

The climb to Hazmburk came late in my day, and the gate was already closed — I climbed over, which I mention as fact rather than advice; in season the site keeps normal opening hours. Dusk on the bare basalt ridge was worth the transgression. The final stretch north to Třebenice went by headlamp, ending at the station in full dark.
