The village of the Oldřich and Božena legend — a thousand-year oak, Božena's spring under a neo-Gothic shelter, a chateau on the ridge and a rail halt below.
Peruc is where Czech schoolbook romance happened: here Prince Oldřich, out hunting around the year 1002, is said to have seen the washerwoman Božena at a spring and made her his wife — their son Břetislav kept the Přemyslid line alive, so the country owes the legend some gratitude. The village plays the part well. Oldřich’s oak, reckoned a thousand years old and over seven metres around, stands at the edge of the chateau park; Božena’s spring below it got a neo-Gothic shelter in the 19th century; the chateau itself closes the square.
It is a practical stop too — a rail halt on the Louny–Slaný line and a pub on the square — and the wooded Débeř valley under the village, with the spring and the Krásná vyhlídka viewpoint, is the nicest way in or out on foot.
