A small medieval town on a sandstone spur at the edge of the České středohoří, with a long sloping square and the curious "bird houses" built onto the rocks.

Úštěk is one of the smallest towns in Bohemia with a protected historic centre — essentially one long, gently sloping square lined with Gothic and Renaissance houses on a narrow sandstone spur. On the rock face below the square hang the Ptačí domky (“bird houses”), timber dwellings built directly onto the sandstone in the 19th century. The town is a natural gateway for walks in this quiet corner of the středohoří, with a railway station on the Litoměřice–Česká Lípa line.
