Nižbor

A Berounka village below a chateau with a Celtic exposition — the great Stradonice oppidum on the plateau above minted gold coins here two thousand years before the Rückl glassworks by the station.

Nižbor sits in the Berounka valley on the edge of the Křivoklát forests, with its chateau — a royal hunting lodge turned baroque — on the rock directly above the river, housing an exposition on the Celts. That is no accident of theming: the plateau above neighbouring Stradonice carried one of Bohemia’s most important Celtic oppida, fortified around 120 BC, famous since 1877 when a bag of gold coins turned up and started an archaeological gold rush. A marked educational trail crosses the site; what it offers today is mainly atmosphere and the view over the valley.

The village itself has a rail halt on the Beroun–Rakovník line and the Rückl glassworks by the station — still cutting crystal, with a visitor centre. The pub of note is Zastávka Nižbor, built into an old railway hut by the line with a few retired railcars parked around it. River-path routes towards Beroun and into the Křivoklátsko woods both pass through.
