Litvínov

A town squeezed between the Krušné hory slope and the North Bohemian coal basin — for hikers, the rail-connected gateway to the eastern part of the range.

Litvínov lies right where the wooded scarp of the Krušné hory meets the North Bohemian basin: mountains on one side of town, the Záluží chemical works and open-cast coal country on the other. The contrast is the point — few places show the region’s two faces so directly. The old centre keeps a Baroque chateau (home to the town museum), but for walkers the town matters chiefly as a transport hub: railway and bus connections make it a convenient start or finish for traverses of the eastern Krušné hory, with Meziboří and the plateau villages directly above.
