A short 19.2 km winter pilgrimage to Říp. Red waymark from Mlčechvosty past the Jevín earthworks and village pubs, over the mountain, blue down to Roudnice.

This is the short winter version of the národní pouť. You approach Říp from the south in half a day, with pubs spread through the villages and trains at both ends. January suits the mountain. The orchards are bare, the views are long, and the summer crowds are gone.

km 8.09

From the Mlčechvosty stop the red waymark climbs gently through Jeviněves, past the Jevín earthworks in the woods above the village. The medieval moat is thirty seconds off the trail. The route continues through Černouček and Ctiněves, both with village pubs for a warm-up stop, and Říp fills more and more of the view ahead. The final climb starts from Ctiněves, in local legend the burial place of Čech himself.

On the summit you find the rotunda and the ring path, with the whole of central Bohemia around you. The blue waymark then goes down the north side through Vesce into Roudnice nad Labem, where the station is a short walk past the square.

On the way

  • Jevín

    castle ruin

The earthwork remains of a small medieval castle above Jeviněves, reputedly a robber-knight's seat destroyed in the 14th century. A massive neck moat is still readable in the woods.

  • Říp

    summit 461 m

The national mountain of Bohemia. A lone basalt dome over the plain where legend puts Forefather Čech, crowned by the Romanesque rotunda of St George rebuilt in 1126.

  • Roudnice nad Labem

    village

An old Elbe town below Říp, dominated by the vast Baroque Lobkowicz chateau built over a Romanesque castle of the Prague bishops.
