Říp
summit · 461 m · Polabí
The national mountain of Bohemia — a lone basalt dome over the plain where legend puts Forefather Čech, crowned by the Romanesque rotunda of St George rebuilt in 1126.
Říp needs no introduction to a Czech reader: the lone, perfectly rounded basalt hill above the Elbe plain is where legend has Forefather Čech survey the promised land, which makes the short climb something between a hike and a pilgrimage. On the summit stands the rotunda of St George — one of the oldest surviving buildings in the country, likely founded around 1039 and rebuilt with its round tower in 1126 by Prince Soběslav I in thanks for the victory at Chlumec. Thick Romanesque walls, tiny windows, seventeen years short of nine centuries.
The hill is wooded, so the famous views come from clearings at the rim rather than the top itself — Podřipsko farmland in every direction, with the České středohoří lined up along the northern horizon. Trails climb from Ctiněves, Mnetěš and Krabčice, and the summit kiosk by the rotunda serves pilgrims in season.

A Winter Pilgrimage to Říp
A short 19.2 km winter pilgrimage to Říp — red waymark from Mlčechvosty past the Jevín earthworks and village pubs, over the mountain, blue down to Roudnice.
