The Skanzen and the Kersko Pines

A 26.2 km flat spring walk through the Polabí — the Přerov nad Labem skanzen, a burnt chapel on its hill, and Hrabal's Kersko pines.

The terrain here asks almost nothing — under 100 m of climbing all day, on field paths, forest lanes and levees — so the only planning the walk needs is a spring forecast and a train ticket. The interest is spaced along it like beads.

From the Ostrá rail stop the route crosses the Labe flats to Přerov nad Labem, where the skanzen — the oldest open-air museum in the country — is worth building the day around; give it an hour or two among the timbered cottages. Beyond Starý Vestec a low rise lifts out of the fields: Břístevská hůra, with the open shell of its lightning-burnt baroque chapel on top, the best viewpoint the flatlands will offer all day.

Then come the pines. Kersko takes the middle of the afternoon — straight sandy lanes through Hrabal’s forest colony, the mineral spring under its pavilion, cottages sunk in the trees — and it is exactly as peaceful as his stories promise. The last stretch runs out of the woods through Velenka and Chrást to the Poříčany railway station, and the closing move matters: the village pub near the station is a proper fourth-price-category establishment, and after 26 flat kilometres it is exactly what you want.
