Past Žižka's Mound

A two-day 45 km walk across the Vysočina from Rozsochatec to Staré Ransko — Žižkova mohyla, a night in Přibyslav, Havlíčkova Borová and the ponds around Krucemburk.

The Vysočina does its rolling-highlands thing the whole weekend: no single big climb, but the road never stays flat.

Day one — monuments and a night in Přibyslav

From the Rozsochatec station the route passes the village chateau and heads east through Jahodov and Česká Bělá; in the woods along the way stands a memorial to an air crash. The historical stop of the day is Žižkova mohyla at Žižkovo Pole — the stone cairn with its chalice, alone in the fields where Jan Žižka died besieging Přibyslav. We ended day one in Přibyslav itself and slept under the stars.

Day two — Havlíčkova Borová and the ponds

The second day works north through Havlíčkova Borová — the birthplace of the journalist Karel Havlíček Borovský, whose memorial house keeps his name in the village’s — and on through Vepřová into the edge of CHKO Žďárské vrchy. Past Krucemburk the landscape turns to woods and fishponds; we spent the second night at the campsite Moře by the Řeka pond, an experience of the peculiar kind Czech campsites do best. Staré Ransko and its bus stop are a short walk beyond.
