Belvedér na Vysoké

The monumental ruin of Count Špork's baroque summer palace and chapel of St John the Baptist on Vysoká hill (471 m) — built 1695–97, struck by lightning in 1834 and never rebuilt.

On the wooded summit of Vysoká (471 m) above Suchdol stand the monumental walls of the Belvedér — a building that was summer palace, chapel and hermitage in one. Count František Antonín Špork had it built in 1695–97 to a design attributed to Giovanni Battista Alliprandi; the legend says the 1,400 ducats it cost were won at cards from the Saxon elector Augustus the Strong in Karlovy Vary. The chapel of St John the Baptist hosted lavish baroque celebrations, with two hermitage buildings by the entrance for the monks who kept the place. Lightning set the abandoned building on fire on 30 April 1834 and it was never restored; the shell of high perimeter walls in the woods is freely accessible.
