Třebívlice

A wine village on the southern rim of the hills where Ulrika von Levetzow — Goethe's last love — lived and is buried; chateau exhibition and a working winery.

Třebívlice is the village of Ulrika von Levetzow: the young baroness to whom the 72-year-old Goethe proposed — and was refused, the disappointment producing his Marienbad Elegy. She inherited the estate, lived at the local chateau from 1824 until her death in 1899, never married, and lies buried by the village church. The chateau keeps a small exhibition of her story, and her famous garnet jewellery is shown in nearby Třebenice.

The connection is alive rather than embalmed: the slopes around the village carry some thirty-five hectares of replanted vineyards, and the local winery bottles under the “Johann W” label with the baroness’s portrait. A railway stop on the southern-rim line makes the village an easy start for the Solanská hora and Košťálov country.
