Tetín

A village on the cliffs above the Berounka where Bohemia's history begins — the Přemyslid stronghold where St Ludmila was murdered in 921, with three churches and castle remains on the edge of the gorge.

Tetín packs more early Czech history per square metre than almost anywhere: a Přemyslid stronghold stood on these cliffs above the Berounka, and here in 921 Princess Ludmila — grandmother and tutor of St Wenceslas — was strangled on the orders of her daughter-in-law, making her the first Czech saint and Tetín a pilgrimage place ever since. The small village keeps three churches (one dedicated to St Ludmila), the scant remains of a later medieval castle on the rock edge, and a museum of the site’s archaeology. The cliff-top paths look straight down into the limestone gorge of the Berounka toward Srbsko.
