Svatobor

The lookout mountain of Sušice — a 31.6 m tower of 1934 (182 wooden steps) with a year-round tourist hut at its foot, on a summit sacred to the pagan Slavs.

Svatobor rises directly over Sušice and carries the town’s weekend soul: a lookout tower and hut have stood on the 845 m summit — by name a sacred grove of the pagan Slavs — since 1900. The first stone tower leaned so badly it had to come down; the current 31.6 m tower of 1934 climbs 182 wooden steps to a gallery at 28 m, with the Šumava ridges filling the southern horizon and the Otava valley below. The Chata Svatobor at its foot serves honest Šumava cooking year-round and sleeps twenty-two — a proper old-school mountain hut experience an hour’s walk from a town square.
