Starý Žeberk

Scant remains of the highest-situated castle of the Krušné hory, on the Jezerka hill above the basin — built to guard the trade route from Saxony.

Starý Žeberk stood on Jezerka (706 m), a steep wooded cone on the rim of the Krušné hory scarp, and was the highest-situated castle of the whole range. It guarded the merchant road from Saxony into Bohemia, but the site was as impractical as it was defensible — hard of access, short of water, difficult to supply — and it was given up early for its successor Nový Žeberk further west. Little masonry survives; what you find on the top is mostly the shape of the site itself, inside the old beech forest of the Jezerka nature reserve, with the open pit of the basin directly below.
