Ostré Calvary

chapel · 398 m · České středohoří

Three baroque chapels on an open hilltop above the hamlet of Ostré near Úštěk, reached by a sandstone staircase and a Way of the Cross.

The Calvary (locally “Kostelíčky”) crowns a 398 m hill above the hamlet of Ostré, about 1.5 km from Úštěk. Building started in 1707 under Václav Růžička, steward of the Jesuit estate in Liběšice, and the design is usually attributed to Octavio Broggio, the baroque architect from Litoměřice. Two identical tower-like side chapels — the Finding and the Exaltation of the Holy Cross — flank the low central Chapel of the Holy Sepulchre; a wide sandstone staircase climbs the hill directly, while a nineteenth-century Way of the Cross of thirteen alcove chapels loops up from the village. After decades of decay the whole complex was taken over by a local monument-restoration society in 2005 and has since been fully repaired.
