Kamýk

The ruin of a Gothic castle on a basalt spur above the village of Kamýk near Litoměřice, first recorded in 1319 — a fragment of its great five-sided tower still stands.

The castle above the village of Kamýk is first mentioned in 1319, when King John of Luxembourg granted it in hereditary fief to Jindřich of Kamýk. Its core was a large five-sided residential tower on the highest point of the basalt spur, with walls over two metres thick of pale and dark stone; the castle was rebuilt in 1547, abandoned for a manor below soon after, taken by the Saxons in the Thirty Years’ War, and was a ruin by about 1650. What stands today is a fragment of the tower on the rock, a short climb from the village, with views across the Elbe valley to Hazmburk and Říp.
