Heřmanův Městec

A small town under the Železné hory with a château in an English park, a long square for lunch — and one of the best-preserved Jewish quarters in eastern Bohemia.

Heřmanův Městec is the market town of the northern Železné hory foothills: a long square with arcaded houses and pubs, a château on its edge whose English park merges into the woods, and — its most distinctive corner — a remarkably complete former Jewish quarter, with a restored synagogue and one of the oldest Jewish cemeteries in Bohemia on the hill behind. For walkers coming off the hills it is the natural lunch stop between Lichnice and the Labe plain.
