Davle

A village at the meeting of the Sázava and the Vltava — its old iron bridge played the Rhine bridge in The Bridge at Remagen, filmed here in the summer of 1968.

Davle sits where the Sázava gives itself up to the Vltava, an old ferry-and-bridge village with a monastery history — the island at the confluence carried the Benedictine monastery of St Kilián from 999 until the Hussites — and one genuinely odd claim to fame: in 1968 the Hollywood war film The Bridge at Remagen dressed the village’s iron bridge up as the Rhine bridge at Remagen. The production was still filming when the Warsaw Pact invaded in August 1968 and had to evacuate to Germany, leaving the story better than the film. The railway station connects Davle down the Vltava to Prague.
