A dead-flat 25.7 km through the Třeboň pond country. The route passes the Stará a Nová řeka reserve, the stone bridges of Stará Hlína and a beer in Nová Hlína, and ends in Třeboň.

The whole route climbs about ten metres in twenty-six kilometres. You walk flat on dykes and sandy forest roads between water. Come in autumn. The oaks turn colour, mist hangs over the ponds in the morning, and the region looks its best.

From Majdalena station the route follows the Lužnice north into the Stará a Nová řeka reserve, where Krčín split the river four hundred years ago. The path keeps to the dykes among meanders and floodplain forest, past the keeper’s house at Novořecká bašta. Beyond Vitmanov it turns west around the top of the Rožmberk system to Stará Hlína and its two Schwarzenberg stone bridges. The long 1799 inundation bridge is the best built thing on the route.

Nová Hlína, a short way on, is the beer stop. From there the final kilometres follow the causeways between the Hlína ponds and arrive in Třeboň through the old town gate. Trains and buses run from the town. The spa, the square and the Regent brewery fill the rest of the day.

On the way

  • Stará a Nová řeka

    monument

Jakub Krčín's 16th-century flood engineering turned nature reserve. The old Lužnice meanders feed Rožmberk, and the Nová řeka canal carries its floods away to the Nežárka.

  • Stará Hlína

    village

A hamlet on the old Třeboň–Jindřichův Hradec road with two remarkable stone bridges. The 12-arch, 119-metre inundation bridge of 1799 is by Josef Rosenauer, and the 1781 bridge crosses the Vítek pond.

  • Třeboň

    village

The Renaissance capital of the South Bohemian pond country. A walled town with the Rožmberk chateau, a peat spa and the Svět pond right under the ramparts.
