Třeboň

The Renaissance capital of the South Bohemian pond country — walled town, Rožmberk chateau, peat spa and the Svět pond right under the ramparts.

Třeboň is the centre of the Třeboňsko pond landscape and the obvious overnight stop on any walk through it. Inside the preserved walls the long Renaissance square, the Rožmberk chateau and the old brewery (Regent, tracing itself to 1379) sit within a few minutes of each other; just outside them begins the Svět pond, with the town’s peat spa tradition alongside. The great fishpond system all around — built in the 15th and 16th centuries by Štěpánek Netolický and Jakub Krčín and still farmed — is what made the town rich, and the flat dikes and canals radiating from it now carry most of the region’s walking routes.
