Cradle of Tramping

An easy 16.9 km through the cradle of Czech tramping. The route passes the Sázava valley cabin settlements from Kamenný Přívoz via Luka pod Medníkem to the Remagen bridge at Davle.

This is an easy half-day trip from Prague, and also a lesson in the history of Czech tramping. The lower Sázava valley is where the whole cabin-and-campfire culture began in the 1920s, and the route goes straight through its heartland. Expect log cabins with American names, totem poles, and the Posázavský pacifik railway running through the gorge.

From the Kamenný Přívoz stop the way passes under the great stone railway viaduct at Žampach, one of the tallest in Central Europe, and follows the wooded valley through Studené to Luka pod Medníkem. The settlements on the way, Dakota among them, are the real thing. These are century-old tramp osady, still lived in every weekend. The middle section climbs over the river bluffs. That is the one stretch of real effort. Then it eases down the valley side.

The finish is Davle at the Sázava–Vltava confluence, across the iron bridge where the 1968 film The Bridge at Remagen was shot. Trains run from Davle back to Prague along the Vltava.
