The Prince's Estates: to Milevsko

Day two of the autumn weekend — 31.9 km from Krsice past Zvíkov castle, across the Vltava arm, and on to the monastery town of Milevsko.

The second day of the weekend that began as part one from Tochovice — and the one with the sights. From Krsice the route works east through the woods to Varvažov at the Skalice river, then along the wooded banks above the Orlík reservoir arm to Zvíkovské Podhradí.

Zvíkov is the hinge of the day: the royal castle on its headland over the drowned confluence of the Otava and Vltava, worth the walk up even outside the visiting season. Crossing the high bridge over the Vltava arm just below is its own event — the reservoir far beneath, the castle across the water. From the east bank the route climbs away from the river through Kučeř and Osek, the one properly rolling stretch of the weekend, and runs out in Milevsko — the oldest monastery in southern Bohemia at the town’s edge, and dinner and a bed in town to close the trip.
