Vlhošť

The highest hill of the CHKO Kokořínsko – Máchův kraj — a 614 m phonolite dome rising from sandstone country, protected as a nature reserve since 1998.

Vlhošť is the high point of the whole Kokořínsko – Máchův kraj protected landscape area: a dome of phonolite that pushed up through the surrounding sandstone about 31 million years ago, which is why a rocky, wooded hill of this size stands alone above country that is otherwise all pine woods and sandstone rock. Together with its lower neighbour Malý Vlhošť it has been a nature reserve since 1998, protecting flowery beechwoods, pine stands, heather and lichens on the rock faces; the reserve also asks visitors to keep off the tops during the bird-nesting season.

There is no tourist infrastructure on the summit — the reward is the climb itself and framed views out over the Holany pond country and across to Ronov. The usual approaches are from the hamlet of Hvězda on the western side.
