Velký and Malý Tisý

A national nature reserve of eleven reed-fringed fishponds near Lomnice nad Lužnicí — one of the country's foremost bird reserves, protected since 1957.

Velký and Malý Tisý are the two ponds that give their name to a national nature reserve of eleven fishponds and the reed beds between them, declared in 1957 — one of the oldest and most important bird reserves in the country. Over 150 bird species have been recorded and most of them nest here: bitterns, purple herons, red-crested pochards and many others. Velký Tisý itself is an old Rožmberk-era pond, built in 1502–1505 under the eye of Štěpánek Netolický.

Walkers cross the reserve on the dike paths — flat, open going with water and reeds on both sides. Bring binoculars; spring and autumn migration are the liveliest times.
