A former royal gold-panning town on the Otava, home to the oldest surviving stone bridge in Bohemia and a castle housing the Prácheňské museum.
Písek grew up in the 13th century around gold-panning on the Otava — the name literally means “sand”. Its centrepiece is the early-Gothic stone bridge from the third quarter of the 13th century, the oldest surviving stone bridge in Bohemia and one of the oldest in Central Europe: 111 metres, seven arches, lined with Baroque statues of saints. The remains of the royal castle by the river hold the Prácheňské museum, and the historic centre around the big square is a pleasant place to wander after a walk.
As a district town, Písek has every practical service a hiker needs — food, accommodation, and rail and bus connections in all directions.
