Kamenná slunce

A quarry face near Hnojnice where volcanic tuff dried around basalt bombs into radiating "stone suns" — a geological formation described nowhere else in the world.

Kamenná slunce is one of those small places that turn out to be globally unique: in an abandoned quarry a kilometre from Hnojnice, the exposed wall shows dozens of “suns” — dark basalt cores ringed by pale rays. They formed in a Tertiary volcanic crater, where blocks fell into wet ash and the drying tuff contracted around them in radial cracks, like a child’s drawing of the sun repeated across the rock. The phenomenon has not been described anywhere else on Earth, which earned the modest wall national nature monument status. It is freely accessible, a short detour from the field lanes between the Ohře and Třebívlice.
