Jestřebí

The ruin of a rock castle carved into a sandstone block above the village — founded by the Berkas of Dubá in the late 14th century, taken by the Hussites in 1426, freely accessible.

Jestřebí castle is more rock than masonry: the Berkas of Dubá founded it at the end of the 14th century by carving rooms, stairs and cisterns directly into a free-standing sandstone block above the marshland between Česká Lípa and Doksy. The Hussites took it along with Česká Lípa in 1426. Centuries of weathering — and quarrying of the soft rock below — have eaten the block into a dramatic torso, which is exactly what makes it worth the climb: the shape of the castle is the shape of the rock. The site is freely accessible and the top overlooks the Novozámecký pond country.
