Doksany

A village on the lower Ohře built around a Premonstratensian convent founded in 1144, with the Romanesque crypt of its church preserved.

Doksany grew around one of the oldest monasteries in Bohemia: a convent of Premonstratensian sisters founded in 1144 by Prince Vladislav II and his wife Gertrude, and consecrated the same year by Bishop Jindřich Zdík of Olomouc. The church of the Nativity of the Virgin keeps its Romanesque basilica walls and a five-aisled crypt from the 12th century under a Baroque exterior. The convent is again home to a religious community, and the church can be visited.

For hikers crossing the flat country along the Ohře the village is also a practical stop — it has a shop, worth knowing about because the stretches either side of it offer little.
